LOUISVILLE, KY.
In Louisville, the country-punk duo Freakwater twists traditional country music into new sonic shapes.
Louisville has always had a thriving local music scene, from punk to hardcore to indie-rock. With the national acclaim of My Morning Jacket, a local band that plays a thunderous mix of Southern/indie-rock and traditional country, plenty are rediscovering the city's rich alt-country scene. Cases in point: singer-songwriter Will Oldham (who has played under a variety of pseudonyms, including Palace, Palace Music and Bonnie Prince Billy) or the country-punk duo Freakwater, both of whom have twisted traditional country into something entirely new and compelling.
LOCAL VENUES: Try Headliner's Music Hall (1386 Lexington Road).
